Norah Jones - Come Away With Me

Verdict: A great CD for soothing labour pains and easing stress.

I'm sure you've seen the adverts for this on television. In fact, we bought it purely because of the adverts and it's now become one of the favourites in our music collection (along with the nursery rhymes). It really proved it's worth, however, during my wife's labour. Although all the songs can be enjoyed in their own right, the CD itself makes great background music and creates a relaxing atmosphere. The contractions seemed a tiny bit more bearable with this playing and a few lavender-scented candles scattered around.

The music itself is a mixture of slow jazz and folk supporting Norah's soft and slightly husky voice. The songs are all fairly similar and can tend to blend into each other, so much so that if you're not concentrating it seems as though you've listened to 45 minutes of a sort of jazz lullaby. This is no bad thing, though, as it means there are no quick-tempo surprises to jolt you out of your increasingly-relaxed state.

If you haven't already got it, this is definitely recommended for either an expectant mother or for parents with an energetic little angel or two (or more). It's the audio equivalent of a comfy armchair and a hot chocolate.
